Quick Overview

Abacus Saab JA37 Viggen for FSX and FS2004

Development of the Saab Viggen began in the mid-1950 as a replacement for the Saab 32 Lansen. The goal was to get an aircraft with the ability to operate from short airstrips, as well as have personnel with minimal training manage upkeep and be capable of Mach 2 at high altitudes and supersonic at low level.

In 1960, development was accelerated when Sweden got a defense agreement with the United States. The design concept was approved on September 28, 1962 and Saab built a prototype that took its first flight on February 8, 1967.

One hundred and ten of the original AJ 37 Viggen design were made and entered service in June of 1971 with the first full squadron active in 1972. Throughout the 70's, work began to create a variant of the Viggen that would work well with the Saab 35 Draken. With significant enhancements in avionics and a new 30mm cannon, the JA 37 variant was born.

Viggen pilots were able to get a missile lock on an American SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft in the 1980's by analyzing the Mach 3+ aircraft. The newer Saab JAS 39 Gripen in the later part of the 1990's forced the phasing out of the JA 37 and it was retired in November 2005.

This exquisite design is intended for use with FS2004 and FSX and features:

- Authentic Exterior Animation
- Custom Sounds
- 2D cockpit
- Full Virtual Cockpit with Gauges and Controls
- Animated canopy
- Afterburner Effects
