Flying the Huey

Install the UH-1H into your FS2004 or FS2002 \aircraft folder. If you haven't already done so, follow the instructions on our installation page.

Press the 'S' key to see the 2D cockpit; press the 'S' key again to see the 3D cockpit and twice more to see the helicopter from the spot plane view. Here's a quick walk around:

  • Press 'E' to start the engine.
  • Press the stick forward and back to see the rotor shaft swivel
  • Shift + 'E' to see the two main doors open and close
  • In the 3D cockpit view you'll see the stick and pedals move.
  • The machine gun turns in concert with the rudder.

Takeoff
Gently apply the throttle to lift off. As you do so, push the stick forward slightly to keep from flying backward.

We recommend that you reach 50 to 75 feet altitude before gaining any forward or backward motion.

Landing

Reduce the power and slowly to descend.

You'll probably have to apply slight forward stick to counter the tendency of the chopper to fly in reverse. The objective is to set down when you have zero forward and backward momentum.

To slow your descent, you'll want to add some throttle. Watch out for the dust as you land.
