Flight Deck 3
Exciting Aircraft Carrier Operations

Step up to the challenge of carrier based flight. The USS George Washington is your new base.

The flight deck is equipped with a powerful catapult to get your Mach 2 aircraft airborne in only a few hundred feet. And the steel cables strung across its stern are strengthened to bring your muscular jet to a screeching halt on a dime.

The working steam catapult and arrestor cables are from Richard Hogen exclusively for Flight Deck 3!

The brand new Fresnel Lens Landing system is from Graham Oxtoby.

On assignment you'll have this equipment at your disposal:

  • F-14 Tomcat
  • F-18 Hornet
  • E-2C Hawkeye
  • CH-46 Sea Knight
  • AV-8B II Harrier
  • S-3A Viking
  • USS George Washington

"... I am very pleased with my recently purchased Flight Deck 3. Truly, the most beautifully designed carrier available - payware or freeware.", M.D. via Internet

"... has surpassed all my expectations ....very grateful and impressed", M.S. via Internet

"WOW! You guys are fast. I just ordered FLIGHT DECK 3 yesterday and received it today. Thanks!"

Takeoff

The alarm sounds.

Hurry onto the deck. It's game time.

The wait is almost over. You're next up to bat.

Taxi quickly but carefully into position in front of the blast shield.

The team rushes forward to connect you up to the catapult.

The steam is flowing and now it's armed.

Set your brake. From his crouching position, the yellow jacketed shooter gives you thumbs up.

This is it. Jam the throttles forward and release the brakes. Feel the G's slam you to the back of your seat.

In 3 short seconds you're thrown off the edge of the deck.

Get the gear up and retract the flaps. Pull back.

Whew! Your adrenalin is still flowing as you climb into the blue yonder.

Landing

Out over the open water, you can see home base - a tiny spec on the horizon. Drop down and fly on past. Then do a 180 back into the wind.

The Landing Signal Officer urges you to lose altitude. You don't want him to wave you off.

Flaps down and throttle back.

The wind is whipping it up. Your grip tightens around the stick as you wiggle it back and forth to line 'er up as the swaying craft grows bigger.

Drop your gear and hook. Stay up there; don't loose too much height.

Half a mile out, you've got the ball. The LSO gives you the green and the meatball looks good (Fresnel lens).

Hold her steady. You're over the edge. Plop her down and give it full power.

Did you make it?

A moment later the hook catches and you're jolted to a stop. Your helmut bangs against your seat back.

Throttle back. The cable is down. Look down for the thumbs up. Taxi off. You're down.

The "Meatball" - Fresnel Lens Optical Landing System

The Fresnel Lens Optical Landing System is another Flight Deck 3 innovation. Pilots know it by its common name "the meatball". It's a visual light scheme that guides to pilot onto the deck.

Find out more about the FLOLS.

This meatball was designed and "manufactured" by Graham Oxtoby.
