ASD - The Standard for Scenery Design Table of Contents: |
The
ASD Wizard To extend the reach of scenery design to beginners, we invented the ASD Wizard. Using the ASD Wizard is a "no brainer". New designers can build scenery with only four easy clicks. Use the ASD Wizard and you'll be flying from any of 2600 airports worldwide almost immediately. Simply select your state and and city, choose the type of environment and tell the ASD Wizard to go to work. In just a few seconds, ASD automatically builds this new scenery area and adds it to your Flight Simulator library. You're ready for takeoff! Scenery design was never so easy or fast. Since the ASD Wizard builds a standard ASD map file, you can also use the ASD Wizard as a template for creating even more detailed scenery. Here's more good news - the ASD Wizard is included in the Airport & Scenery Designer package. |

| Elevated "Mesh Terrain" | ||
The new version of Airport & Scenery Designer puts texturized, elevated scenery in the hands of the designer. The result is a dramatic improvement in the appearance of certain types of geographical features as you can see from the two images to the right. Additionally, the generated scenery shows improved frame rate when used with most 3D video cards. |

Airport & Scenery Designer's "map view" (to the left) shows you a bird's eye of the design area. You can easily pick out a road (purple) and a highway (red) although you can't see them in the above scenery. You can however see the the river on both the map (blue) and in the foreground scenery. The squares at the bottom of the map are standard textured tiles. Notice that the river runs along the side of the mountain. The points in the upper right corner specify the varying elevations of the mountain sides. These elevation points can be easily changed. Airport & Scenery Designer also has the ability to import NOAA elevation data for the USA geographical area. Thanks to Justin Tyme for the elevated mesh terrain examples which will be featured in his upcoming PA/NJ scenery. |

| 3D Objects Made Simple | ||||
To make your scenery more exciting, you can add a variety of 3D objects. Airport & Scenery Designer macro facility makes this a snap. With a 3D Library containing more than 200 custom objects, you're well on your way to creating superb, new scenery. And because ASD was originally designed to be extensible, you can add your own custom objects to the already large library to create even more intricate 3D scenery. Let's quickly see how you can add 3D objects to your scenery.. Step 1. To the right is a typical overhead map view of the design area. After selecting the "macro" tool, the user selects the location for the 3D object by clicking on the map. The location is indicated by the arrow at L,Lo. Immediately, the Macro Palette screen appears. |
Step 2. 3D objects are arranged by topic. The 200+ objects in the standard library are grouped into topics such as "Aircraft", "Bridges", "Hangars", "Ships" and others. Select a topic by clicking on the appropriate tab. The individual 3D objects are arranged alphabetically on the tab sheets. Click on one of the entries to see a preview of the 3D object. Next click the OK button. The 3D object is now part of the scenery.
NOTE: If you add your own custom objects to the library, you can group them into existing topics or create entirely new topics. |
Step 3. Some 3D objects require you to choose one or more characteristics e.g. color, height, length, etc.
To change the 3D object's characteristics, right click on the triangle and the Macro Properties screen appears. Set the characteristics on the appropriate tab sheet and click OK. That's it. In just three steps, you've added a custom 3D Object at a precise scenery location. It couldn't be simpler. |

The Finished Scenery Here it is! You've just seen how Airport & Scenery Designer lets you add those important details that transform normal scenery into spectactular scenery. With more than 200 3D objects in the Library, you have a wide choice of customizable objects at your disposal. And because the Airport & Scenery Designer Library is extensible, you can add your own macros and they'll automatically appear on the Macro Palette - ready for you to position at the exact scenery location. |
